  • Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or related subject area.
  • Holders of a degree in a different subject area but with relevant experience in software development would also be considered.

The Role

FactBio is a young and growing company with a focus on developing products and services in the life sciences industry. We have a strong client list including many of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies and have developed our own data curation and discovery platform, Kusp (Knowledge Sharing Platform), which is now being employed across the life sciences industry.

We are looking to grow our team with a motivated individual who enjoys a collaborative environment and who is eager to contribute in shaping the future of the company.

You will play a key role in developing FactBio’s two core software platforms. Kusp is a curation and integration tool aimed at supporting scientists working with clinical and pre-clinical data. Sherpa is a new tool being developed to help scientists edit and maintain their expert knowledge. Kusp and Sherpa use semantic technologies and resources such as ontologies to help users describe their data in rich, meaningful ways in preparation for further analysis, querying and integration. You will play an important role in driving the research and development within the company as we aim to deliver cutting edge, novel solutions in this area. You will also work with our clients, ranging from smaller biotechs to some of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the world, who use our software and services. Some international travel may be required.

Your core responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Software development on FactBio’s core software platforms
  • Working with FactBio’s product manager to assist in communicating with users and in gathering their requirements to deliver continuous improvement of Kusp and our other services
  • Consult and collaborate with FactBio’s key clients and partners to drive our service delivery and innovation

Required competencies

The ideal candidate will have the following competencies:

  • Experience in developing software using Python and Django
  • Experience in developing and maintaining relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Experience in developing in JavaScript
  • Knowledge of Git for code versioning
  • Responding to user requirements as they evolve over time

Preferred competencies

It would be an advantage to have the following competencies:

  • Experience in building and querying with ElasticSearch
  • Experience of deploying to cloud platforms using Nginx and Gunicorn
  • Familiarity with ontologies used in the life science domain, such as from the OBO Foundry
  • Knowledge of or experience with Semantic Web technologies such as RDF and OWL
  • Knowledge of graph technology such as Neo4J
  • Working closely with users to understand their needs and communicate those requirements to others
